At long last the Fishworks project has borne fruit and SUN launched the Storage 7000 Open Storage appliances yesterday. The results look every bit as delicious as the best tuna I have tasted. It combines the best of OpenSolaris innovations with quality hardware to get you an integrated storage appliance that for the first time gets rid of hardware RAID and seamlessly adds in Solid State disks to the storage hierarchy thanks to ZFS.
It is quite amazing to read about the specifics from the various blogs of the Fishworks team. These devices represent the beginning of the practical realization of Jeff Bonwick’s General Purpose Storage vision. The screenshots point to amazingly polished and slick GUI interfaces for monitoring, control and analytics. Some of the credit goes to the talented Chandan who contributed to UI effort.
